Free Guinea Confederacy: Infographic

Description

Continuing along with my 1959 independent Confederacy. In the Dark Continent the Rebel flag flutters over places with such mocking names as "Liberia" and "Freedonia". The CSA became interested in colonisation after the Second Mexican-American War in the 1870's, when Liberia fell into British hands after the defeat of the American and Mexican forces. When this happened, Richmond expressed an interest in possessing this territory, and purchased Liberia, as well as a stretch of the Guinea coast, from Britain. The one condition: it could not be used to continue the slave trade. This caused a fuss across the Confederacy, until in the late 1870's, especially in 1878, when internal strife caused a change in Confederate politics. Diplomatically, the "peculiar institution" was suicide, and so Richmond manumitted slavery and banned the practice. Thus ushered in a peace and calming down internally, as well as founded the "Benevolent Burden" System, which continues to this day, 1 January 1959.

The actual Free Guinea Confederacy did not exist, the purchased African land being left as unorganised territories of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, with Richmond's Confederal government only owning the inter-territorial commerce. It was not until Leopold II sought recognition for the Congo Free State did Richmond get the idea. In 1887, the Free Guinea Confederacy was established as an independent state, whose dedication to native enlightenment and free trade was a humanitarian light in the Dark Continent. This could not be farther from the truth, as slavery became the de facto means of control in the country. Here, the Benevolent Burden System was different, and racially those from the CSA were superior to the native Africans in every case. Thus, oppressed groups in the CSA, such as the half-White, half-Negro group called Mulattos. Although not quite White, these groups were treated as proper citizens of the FGC, and formed its upper class as administrators, clerks, and militiamen almost immediately. As well, Confederate born Negroes were given advanced property rights and even the chance to marry outside of their race to advance their children's caste.

Recently, the FGC has come under international criticism as a brutal oligarchy which Richmond has little interest in controlling. As long as the numbers are good, the abuses in the FGC are ignored.

Awesome! Definitely love seeing how the CSA would twist colonization into something "humanitarian."
