Throne of Columbia

Description

Basic idea: America does not revolutionise politics very much at all. Hamiltonian ideas trumped Jeffersonian ones, and General Washington was the first unelected leader of the United Kingdom of Columbia.

The POD in 1776 sets a very different American rebellion, resulting in the independence of the United Kingdom of Columbia, invoking the heraldry of a great protector nation, whose job is to ensure the freedom of the New World from the powers of Europe, and to never entangle in European affairs. The rise of a fairly isolationist sleeping giant in OTL's USA, whose focus is peace in the New World. The twenty-two stripes fluttered freely over the French speaking ranches in Louisiana and the English speaking plantations in Virginia. In fact, Columbia embrace the French and the English alike, hoping to form a new culture out of them. Attempts to mix the languages further have failed in all but spelling reforms here and there.

The expansion west was halted by the Russian Oregon territory, and the Mexican Empire. After the events which led to Texan independence arose, the Mexican Empire was destroyed, and with it, any sense of power in the region. On the Pacific coast of the New World, however, bubbled up a new power: California. The First California Republic fell to imperialist ambitions when the First California Empire arose... Then after the death of the emperor, his weak son lost the empire to the Second California Republic. In recent years, the country has been riding a wave of reactionary nostalgia. The discussion into forming the Second California Empire holds great merit in the golden city of Sacramento.

There is no scourge of radical leftist sentiments, for they have no basis in democracy. Here, the scourge of the West is republicanism, rule by the peasants, for the peasants. A disgusting ideology, modelling off of the debased Athenian ideals. Did Plato's Republic not cast this notion of universal suffrage to the bin? It rose first in Brasilia, which led to the military taking power and establishing an empire. The ideology spread to Russia, where it took root. After the country's revolution in 1909, the European powers, preparing for war, united to step in and stop it. This led to entire decades of revived religious militancy, colonialism, and imperialism. The autocratic powers of the world took the Middle East, China, and began poking away at Persia, which changed itself to adopt certain republican institutions.

Today the world is on the brink of war, as the complex system of alliances, growing sectarian hatred, fear of betrayal, and collapsing international market are bringing the powers at play closer and closer to giving the green light to their generals. If nothing, THAT might stimulate the economy.

Though Argentina is in the same faction as Brasilia, they are fierce rivals. France and Germany would sooner gas the other's capital than defend it. Columbia would be more likely to go to war with California than protect it from a European invader, and Alaska would benefit more from taking the Oregon route and sticking with Columbia. Alliances mean nothing but temporary guarantees of not actively preparing for war against each other.

Pretty good map. Though I think a move away from monarchy is inevitable though a move towards democracy is not.
